Signs Your Furnace Needs to be Changed

Updated: Apr 19

  • Age of your furnace: Just like a vintage car, a furnace that's been warming your home for 15 to 25 years has charm, but it might be nearing retirement. Just like a trusty old car, many decide to upgrade to a newer model after about 17 years. Of course, just like a vehicle, a furnace's lifespan can be influenced by how well it's taken care of, how often it's serviced, and how much it's used, especially when the Canadian winter hits full force. Keeping up with regular check-ups and fixing any issues promptly can help your furnace live a long and warm life.

  • The repair guy is on speed dial as your furnace is breaking down more often: If you're seeing your furnace repair technician more than your friends, it's a sign your furnace may be ready for a replacement. In general you should only be seeing your HVAC service technician about once a year for regular annual maintenance.

  • Your wallet feels lighter while your energy bills feel higher: If your heating bills are going up, despite your home not feeling any toastier, your furnace might be losing its efficiency touch. On average homeowners can save about 15% on annual heating costs by replacing an old furnace with a newer, high-efficiency model.

  • A game of temperature hide-and-seek otherwise known as, are some rooms hot and and others cold around the home: When some rooms feel like a sauna and others like an igloo, your furnace isn't playing fair with heat distribution.

  • Strange sounds / noises from the furnace: If there are more creaks and groans coming from your furnace than from an old wooden staircase, it's time to pay attention.

  • An increase in poor air quality around the house: An uptick in dust or rust around the house could mean your furnace's filtering days are behind it. If any or all of these scenarios hit close to home, it might be wise to have a heart-to-heart with an HVAC specialist about whether it's time for a furnace upgrade. Keep wise, keep warm and carry on!
